Salisbury & Wells Theological College - 20 May 1984

Today was the point when I met the Priest with whom I will be working during my summer Placement. He entered the College in a most business-like manner, and I noticed that many of the students turned round, impressed by his dignified style. He was smoking a cigar and insisted on buying me a drink at the bar. I had my usual tomato juice, neat, whilst he knocked back two double whiskies! he was wearing a beautifully-tailored cassock, looking every inch a true Priest, and I felt very pleased when he said how much he was looking forward to showing a nice young man like me how it was done, even if it did sound a bit condescending. I felt strangely excited at the prospect of joining him in his parish for three weeks. he was so friendly and even said I could call him by his Christian name - Vivian_ except in front of his parishioners. Eventually I saw him leave in his white Mercedes, showing further his refined good taste and sophistication, and his humble manner in using worldly wealth and goods for Godly purposes, without being taken over by them. I can see that after a year's dry academic work and study, this parochial experience will be a true inspiration.
